The art of Marble Inlay was introduced in
India in the 17th century during the Mughal period. The
use of pietre dure in India has became a matter of great
controversy for years. Some have claimed that it was derived
from Florentine tradition of Florence in Italy others says that
it developed independently in India. Recently it has been
cogently argued that the techniques was indeed Italian in origin
but it was modified by Indian Traditions of Craftsmanship. Today
Marble Inlay craft is one of the most beautiful & a popular form
of Indian art. The Taj Mahal is a classic example of beautiful
marble inlay art. Inlay Table Tops are finely carved & embedded
with semi precious stones. In the base marble of Inlay table
tops floral, geometric, Persian, Victoriana design & patterns
are finely carved, the flowers & motifs are cut, shaped &
finished in different color stones, then base of marble is
grooved & hand carved identical to each motif as per the
selection pattern so that each motifs fits in the groove. The
cut motifs are then set in these grooves polished & finished.
